The Laramie High School Nordic Ski Team hosted the first high school Nordic race of the year at Happy Jack recreation area this Friday and Saturday. The six Wyoming teams competed in team sprint races Friday and a distance freestyle race Saturday.
Two athletes made up each team for the sprint race, consisting of a .8 km loop around the camp ground, completed a total of six times for varsity races and four times for junior varsity races. For the mens varsity, Kelly Walsh High School (KWHS) of Casper took first, followed by Jackson Hole and Laramie. In the womens varsity race, KWHS and Natrona County High School (NCHS) took first, followed by Jackson Hole and Lander (LVHS) in third. NCHS and KWHS took first in the mens junior varsity race, followed by
LVHS and NCHS. LVHS took first and third in the womens junior varsity race with NCHS taking second.Saturdays race started out in the campground loop and went out into the meadow to trails further out and ended down Ridge/Alter trail back into the campground loop. Levin Zars, a senior at LHS, took first in the mens varsity 5k race with a time of 16:12 followed by Bryan Sanger and Nathan Hough of KWHS with times of 16:46 and 16:58. The varsity womens race was won by Bridget Weiner of KWHS, with a time of 21:12. Laura Stamp, of NCHS was second with a time of 21:31 followed by Jackson Holes Yara Thomas, also finishing with a time of 21:31.
Norman Cardinal of KWHS was first in the mens junior varsity 3k race with a time of 12:39, followed by Eric Brecheen with a time of 12:42 and Nick Pampe with a time of 13:16,
both of Jackson. The womens junior varsity race was won in 14:40 by Natalie Thulin of Jackson. Tasha Radosovich of NCHS was second with a time of 14:54 followed by her team mate Marley Realing with a time of 15:40.
The next high school Nordic Ski meet will be held on December 18th and 19th on Casper Mountain.
